I am remodeling my 2001 Triton TR21PD. 225 EFI w/ low hours great compression. What will I run into when I get into the electrical panels and pumps?
I met Earl Benz and Ray Scott at a sporstman show before buying my 1999 Triton. I still love the boat. Still running my 225 Yamaha 2 stroke, but one of these days i do want to repower to a 4 stroke.
Could you do a good, bad, ugly on Cobra boats?
An issue they didn't have, but do now, which is not a triton only problem (as you said, mass conglomerate factory) is the boats for about 6-8 years used something called an omniBUS. Yes, the capitalization is correct. The idea being, instead of wiring up a dozen plus switches for pimped out models, they would have two five wire control panels, that operated a control box. The control box would have all the power/ground wires for, you guessed it, items it controlled run to it. Sounds good, centralizing wiring and simplifying it is good, buuuuuuuut, they didn't simplify the grounding, and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with the gauges.
.
On many tritons, this wonder box, is in control of your starting, and stopping of the engine, no matter what brand, or how new. Why? Well, about the time this thing went in, one button push to start stop, was a popular wizmo gizmo in the marine world. Seadoo (ehem, bombardier) had been implementing it for ages before. I blame them for the trend. In order to put the fancy push to start/stop button on the dash, they decided to just run it through the system.
.
Well, what happens when the system breaks. According to the manual, key switch operation (btw, you STILL have to turn the key to the run position, and leave it there, which is in a gated compartment by your leg) WILL BE RETURNED TO THE ORIGINAL OPERATION. What reaaaaaallly happens? It doesn't. You are just fugged, unless you know someone, who you can call, and get the answer from, (like me) who will tell you to use a screwdriver, or whatever you can find, to remove that key switch bucket, then remove the interconnect harness from the key switch, and plug it into your engine harness like god intended. And owe btw, if the omniBUS control box fails, you also loose all functionality of everything, no pumps, no lights, nothing.
.
All that said, I'm working on one now, with just those problems and since I have a background in avionic bench repair, as well as building aircraft (think stratolaunch R.O.C. and fun things like it) I repair the boxes.
.
So, yea, omniBUS, cool idea, they should have not rat's nested the wires, done a better job with ground distro, had a redundancy built in, and a warning light for failure.
.
.
BUT WAIT, THERE"S MORE! RANGER, yes beloved Ranger, has THE SAME BOXES/omniBUS in some of their boats as well. I am unsure of how many. There is a R model for the box, as in revised, and there are panels that do not have the start-stop button on them, and since I have no experience with rangers (not counting riding in one tower powered back in the late 80s) I can't say if any of them had the push to stop start feature, but they will be subject to the massive failure of the box if or when it does happen.
.
I have not seen anything about that system being in a Nitro.
Own a 2002 Tr-21 love the boat, fast and takes waves good
How does this vid have 13K views and only 496 Likes???!?!???
CLICK THE LIKE BUTTON PEOPLE!!! There's no better channel of this type on YouTube!!!
Support these guys damn it!
The problem with Tritton, Ranger and Nitro is Johnny Morris and his "Cut as many corners as possible" to get 'er done! He's destroyed EVERY brand he's bought. Mako, Ranger, Nitro, and Triton are now JUNK!!!
Sadly, the best "quality" boat you can buy from WRM is probably the Trackers, but even those are pretty overpriced.
When he TOLD the Ranger staff HOW they were going to start cutting corners, most of them walked out. That says EVERYTHING anyone needs to know about a Johnny Morris owned brand.
Your brother is 6'11" WHaaaaattt???!?!!?!? We have to see that!
Anyone else want to see that like this comment!
Maybe an overhead shot with you and him laying on the deck of a bass boat! I work with a massive 6'7" lurch of a guy and he's huge, and I've used to work with the Miami HEAT and met SHAQ and he's also 6'11" (the 7' thug was a liiitle exaggeration) and my hand got lost in his when we shook hands. I can only imagine your poor parents' grocery bill! LOLOL
My 02 TR19 with a 250 4-stroke proxs is a blast
I v had bass boats for 20 years, nitros , Ranger… My 2025 Triton 20XP is the best i ever owned. Ride , speed, fit and finish.
can you please do a the good, the bad, the ugly on the evinrude ocean pro. please
by joey
I have a1998 HYDRASPORTS 196, 2nd owner bought from Rusty Rust in Nashville in 2016 repowered 200 in 2023, upgraded all electronics, Raptors and new DT trailer, Looks and rides and fishes like a new one, One of the best and fastest boats Mr. Earl ever built
Wonder where a guy could get new tinted windshield's for a 2001 Triton TR-22?
Still a fun boat, Yamaha ox will push 72+ .
I can't drive it😂 65-68 is just fine 😅
What boat would u buy today
Have a 2022 19 Trx patriot and it’s a really good boat runs great
I have a 2002 TR186 with a 150 VMax. It’s a great boat that fishes and rides very well. I bought it about 4 years ago as my first bass boat. I’ve had no major issues with the boat but have had to replace some minor things. The boat will run about 64 mph with two people and fishing gear in there (if you want to do that fast).
I have a 2023 18 TRX and so far no issues and runs great. Plan to keep a long time but don't expect to see these offered in 2026.
Compared to a Nitro Z18 the Triton is a better boat IMHO.
Went to the recent Bass Classic Expo and all major boats were displayed and marketed except Triton. What's odd is there was Tritons at the Redcrest Expo ?
No fit and finish issues I can find. I think mine was made in Midway ARK ( now closed) but they have been built in multiple locations of the years.
My best buddy has a 2004 19TRX. Lots of fish caught with that boat. Rides well, runs plenty fast with the 200 Merc! He told me he got it for 30 k back in the day. Can't touch it for under 60 today. And I agree with you Andy. It makes no sense for BPS to keep building Tritons so it looks like their future is bleak.
Love my 2000 TR21. It's one of a kind build, with Real Tree Camo cloth laid into the hull. Bought it new and will keep it till I die! I've rebuilt the axels and brake system on the MFI trailer, updated to LED tail lights, just basically updating items as they wear out. Updated all my electronics, and installed marine grade 8AWG wiring for the graphs, etc. Just added a Ghost and recessed foot tray, designed and built heavy duty dual graph mount for the bow. I designed and built an aluminum bow panel to replace the old wood grain plastic part that came from the factory. I'm able to mass produce the graph mounts and bow panels if anyone needs one, let me know. BTW, always fun to watch your channel!!
I had a 2003 TR186 that was a solid boat, even went through the eye of a category 5 hurricane and still kept on going. 🤣
I had one of Earl's last boats, a 2005 20X with a 225 Gen 1 E Tec. It was a pretty good boat for me. To me, the trailer was always the weakest component of the early Tritons, mine included.
How about the triton fish and ski i was looking at a couple early 2000s with a 225 on them
Can you do one over omc boats. I have a 1989 Gemini 200dcx bass boat, they were hand made by the small mouth king Billy westmorland made for dale hollow lake. Some of these boats have been forgotten but they have lasted for many years and when you see them on the water people remember having one.
2000 TR21 250SS Suzuki 75 mph
Live in coastal SC and have run a white 1999 Triton TX21, for 15 years. Fitted with a white Suzuki 200. Was given the nickname, “The Ghost from the Coast”. Most versatile boat I’ve ever fished in. Lucky to have her.
Im running a 2001 TR 21DC. It had a 225 EFI on it and it ran 73 with a 25 trophy and it ran that flawless , in 2024 I upgraded to a new Merc 250. I never had an electrical problem. You are right about the plastic though it does crack so I had Aluminum dash and bow panels made.
Triton issues= WIRING !
Why they couldn't tidy that shit up, just blows my mind. Ever replaced control cables, livewell valve cables, or steering systems on a Triton?
What a friggin nightmare!
What does all this nonsense have to with Triton??? I clicked off!!
If it has anything to do with White River Marine Group, RUN.
The 2001 TR21 is a very good hull in My opinion. It will not hook in a turn, and is still pretty quick. Repowered my boat with a Merc 250 with a five blade 25 pitch prop.As You mentioned the plastic trim is troublesome. I replaced the bow panel with tinted lexan. but the trim on the consoles is original , as is the carpet. The skin on the seats has finally given up. Thanks for remembering these older boats.
I love my 2009 Triton 20 X3 Pro! It takes big water great and gives a smooth ride! everything is laid out perfectly! I wouldn't even consider a Nitro or Ranger if I were buying a new boat! Johnny Morris is just eliminating those boats competition by ending production of Tritons! If JM would build them like Earl Benz, Nitro or Ranger couldn't compete! I see that the pros were forced out of Triton and now had to take a Ranger!
I run a Triton 2012 21 HP ELITE (2014 Mercy 250 Pro XS), it's a great riding and running boat, takes rough water well…. They didn't make the wider front deck till 2014 which would have been nice…. That said, a young man like a son of me has a 2023 Bass Cat Puma STS and that has to be one of the best riding, rough water boats. Godspeed. ><>
I haven't heard officially about Triton ending, but there are rumors about a new faster Ranger hull, I think it might just be Triton's XP hull. Also, you can now order Rangers rigged with a Yamaha.
So happy to have found a pristine 1996 Hydra Sports LS205. Wrote the guy a check, so it’s paid for without a boat loan, boat still has a great modern look. When these boats were built during the 90’s, OMC lined these up as base boats under the Stratos and Javelin lines. With that in mine, less is more in terms of keeping it base with less factory add ons. Less to break and this boat is simple to work on.
Very happy with my 2012 model Triton 19XS, I would definitely buy another one, the TR 186, 196, 20 and 21 are all excellent boats as well. The new JM owned Tritons don't have the quality they used to but the new XP Hull performs and rides very well, definitely better than Ranger or Nitro. Dropping Triton would be a bad move, it's the best performing hull they have.
My 98 Tr17 with Evinrude 115 runs 54. Love the little boat. Fits in the garage. Easy on gas. I fish twice a week every week.
I got a 2024 20XP from Anglers Choice Marine. I’ve also owned a 2017 19 TRX Earl built and a 2006 TR186 Earl built. The 20XP is legit…
Membership sounds interesting. I'd be in
Good recap. Would love to see more shop life and hands on work. Day in the life would be sweet!
We have a 01 tr22 dc with a 01 225 yamaha! Runs upper 60's but would love to repower with a 250 someting.
No one is ever going to top that giveaway
1992 tf170 nitro still on it not a scratch on it. The only thing I don’t like is that your the only thing you can get was either Evinrude or Johnson just had a Johnson 90 hp Ohio doesn’t like otherwise you gotta clean carburetors always even if you don’t burn ethanol fuel still have to clean them if it sits more than three months
Still waiting on the Ranger/Triton/Nitro plant tour
On my 2nd triton…..never any problems…..had a 99 180 premiere…..present boat is a 2016 179trx.
Triton is not going away
Its pathetic too just put businesses out because you can't out sell them. It's a free market I get it but this industry can grow if you stop big corporations from owning everything.
