  1. I didn’t think it was much of an upgrade over any of the Blu Rays I have. If the colour bugs me I’ll adjust my tv. It wasn’t like..oh, it’s sharper or has deeper colours.

  2. A few thoughts – best this has ever looked? I wonder how it compares to a great analog print if one still exists; of course you'd need to rent an empty cinema to get the exact effect, lol, or have a film projector.
. Someone wrote below "2009 Blu-ray of this movie was great too, this 4K is slightly better in resolution but more or less the same in color timing." As a professional audio guy I like to trick people by challenging them to identify 'super' high sample rates – beyond the range of human hearing. (Unless you buy into psycho-acoustics which as the name implies are unprovable.) No one has ever been able to reliably identify a better sounding 'super' high sample rate in any double blind tests I've done – or anyone else has done.

I mention this because of the perceptive comments from the guy who wrote about the great 2009 Blue-ray. I'm curious how many people can reliably identify a difference between this great 2009 version and the 4K. Maybe the answer is, "dude, this isn't audio" and the answer is "lots of people can."

Thanks for a very good video, btw, Films At Home.

  3. Just bought this, hope it's a good transfer. Seriously one of the best movies of all time. I have The Man With No Name trilogy on bluray but recently got a Bravia 4k OLED. Trying to think of must own movies and this one came to mind.

  4. hey, i got the 2014 Blu ray and for me it looks fantastic, except for all the scenes with english text on screen like "the good" "the bad" "the ugly" "the end", ya know? it looks like they made the restauration from the original italian negative but every time english text is written on screen it probably comes from a bad US print because the quality is A LOT worse. i got as i said the 2014 blu ray version (european realese), is this also like this in the new realeses?

  5. Can someone please help me 🙂

I want to buy Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns on blu-ray but just can't decide which one to pick. It's like every version has its ups and downs.

So far I found the following versions. I'm guessing the 20th Century Fox (UK) will be the exact same transfer as the MGM (US)? Are there any other UK/US versions that are the same transfer? Which one of all these versions do you suggest and why?

    A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS

    -20th Century Fox (UK 2013)

    -Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (US 2011)

    -Kino Lorber (US 2018)

    -Kino Lorber (US 2022 ''4K'')

    FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE

    -20th Century Fox (UK 2013)

    -Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (US 2011)

    -Kino Lorber (US 2019)

    -Kino Lorber (US 2022 ''4K'')

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

    -20th Century Fox (UK 2013)

-20th Century Fox (UK 2014 ''Remastered'')

    -Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (US 2009/2011)

    -Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (2014 ''Remastered'')

    -Kino Lorber (US 2017)

    -Kino Lorber (US 2021 ''4K'')

THE MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY

    -20th Century Fox (UK 2010/2014)

    -Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (US 2010/2014)

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

    -Paramount Pictures (UK 2011)

    -Paramount Pictures (US 2011/2017)

    -Warner Bros. (US 2013)

    DUCK, YOU SUCKER!

    -Eureka Entertainment (UK 2020)

    -Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (US 2014)

    -Kino Lorber (US 2018)

    Many thanks!!! 😀

  6. I don't understand why they don't add more subtitles on 4K discs. I'm from The Netherlands and would buy this release if it had dutch subtitles but unfortunately the only subtitles are English. In my opinion they continue to encourage illegal downloads because there is no legal alternative.

  7. I thought the DVD that I had looked better than the yellow tint of the blu ray release. Which was highly disappointing. I may pick this up for the upgrade since this is still one of my favorite flicks of all time.

  8. i'm a huge fan of TGTBATU – but you forgot to mention that key scenes were deleted and moved to, obviously, the 'deleted scenes' section – what a huge disappointment for me! when i saw the movie i was so excited then i'm like – wait a minute, did i just miss a few scenes? or what? – then i decided to 're-watch' the movie from beginning to end, only this time, fast forwarding like 4x – and sure enough, some key scenes i was expecting to see in 4k were deleted. went to the 'deleted scenes' section and bam! they all were there! after this i'm like – shit i need a refund! what a huge letdown for me!

  9. I was quite surprised with how good this looks without HDR, wasn't happy with it not converting to HDR as my settings didn't switch from the BT to the ST so it showed it on my blu ray settings and unusually this didn't have a scene selection option in the menu which is too bad for a film with a run time of 2hrs 40 and I wasn't impressed too much with the box art and no disc art etc, nothing extra included for such an epic movie, though I will say I've never owned this on any format, I watched this on Netflix last year and I can tell with this 4k this looks a hell of a lot sharper but I wouldn't dream of picking this up on 4k with no HDR if I already owned the blu ray.

  10. Great review as always Jeff. Never noticed the colour issues, probably to ingrossed in the movie. Have got my copy on order from Amazon 🇺🇸. Can't wait to watch again.

  11. Honest question, and I don't want this to be read as snarky, but when you say the colours are "corrected but it still has moments and it's not perfect," what are you basing that off? Personal taste, reference material?

  12. Does this release have the theatrical cut on both the 4K and the Blu-ray? I don't have a 4K setup but would be interested in it if the Blu-ray was the theatrical release as well. I have the older Blu-ray trilogy that I think is the extended release (I'll have to check my copy).

  13. Great info. Thanks. It was film in 'Techniscope' which filmed half the 35mm negative and then squeezed and blown-up to full-frame 35, so the image can never be as sharp as a full-frame 35mm filmed in Panavision. But it's looking good now.

  14. Thanks for deleting my previous comment. I’ll say again as the information in your video is poor to say the least! You’re wrong about the mono soundtrack it wasn’t on the previous release. It’s the laser disc mono soundtrack put on this 4k release which is the theatrical version or near as dammit! The other soundtrack the 5.1 on this is an upmix. There’s no HDR because it would have made the picture worse because the 2014 4k remaster by the Italian company ritrovata didn’t do a particularly good job on that hence it can’t have HDR without it looking worse. Kino didn’t do a new 4k Master they colour corrected the existing one! How do you not know this? If you’re gonna do a video you need to do your homework Jeff! Stop with the misleading information and the lack of. And by deleting comments that call you out isn’t on!

  15. I don't know what the color is supposed to look like, as intended by the director and cinematographer, but growing up any version I saw on TV and home video had the extremely hot color temperature (orange/yellow) with high saturation levels.
The colour turned me off the movie, but I figured it's the way its supposed to look.

I've read online that this is how the director intended it to look, but don't know whether that is true.

  16. Actually, I think the audio is a huge upgrade. The original mono track is much cleaner than the previous blu-ray, and the 5.1 remix seems to be much more faithful to the original track than the previous 5.1 one which has a lot of sound effects redone.
