WJ Buyers Guide – Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ Good, Bad, Ugly

Here is a quick view into what I consider to be the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ (1999-2004).

INFO ON THE 2000/2001 CYLINDER HEADS ISSUE:

Here is a great thread on a Wrangler Forum which gives you info on how to identify and an over view of the issue:

  1. WHY did you say the wj is stand alone with it's parts?! I have a 2004 wj 4.0 and a 2004 tj and they share the same inline 6 -4.0, both have d30 front axle and d35 rear axle.( Yes you can swap out the u-joint axle yokes for cv vice versa on these axles. ) maybe you were meaning the v8 wj is stand alone with most parts? Unless you do have a d44? Axle mounts can be moved.

  2. Great information! I’m the original owner of a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7 HO, which is still my daily driver. Minor issues are popping up here and there, but it runs well with just under 185K miles. I only recently discovered your channel, years after you made this video! All the best to you!

  3. I just got a 2000 grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0. Quadra drive.
99k. It’s so clean. Parked in a garage all the time. Paint is like new. Wish I could post a picture.

  4. I would not own any vehicle that I am not able to stretch out and sleep in the back! Love my WJ, last "car" I will ever buy. Took out the back seats and converted a flat platform for camping and sleeping in!

  5. I have a different question one you probably don’t get a lot and by the way you have proper me cure death wobble and properly correct it I appreciate that I am having trouble with my driver side door window I fixed the wires everything works except for driver window I replaced the motor and and window goodies don’t know what it’s called when I plug the motor in the window goes up and that’s it the motor then over heats so I unplug the switch motor still over heats is my door switch stuck or do I have a crossed wire

  6. i have a 2000 Grand Cherokee ltd 4.7 that's been sitting around for a few years since the engine prob needs to be replaced/rebuilt. everything is fine except for the engine…thinking prob lifters. it's been sitting at least 6-7yrs never got to it. i thought about junking it to get the space back but now i think it might just be the perfect toy/overlander.

  7. I've had 2 xjs bought my first Wj last November 2004 4.0 What should I be mostly looking out for and what mods too start with? It's lifted 2.5 as of right now on 17'wrangler tires. Also 4.0 special edition what is that may i ask?

  8. I am a new WJ owner. I bought an '04 Laredo with the 4.0. I've had an XJ for years and am familiar with the 4.0, so I didn't feel bad getting a Jeep with 163,000 miles on it. It's a nice ride, but it has been needing a lot of work. The previous owner beat on it and wheeled it fairly hard. I'm slowly working my way through the issues, but I'm not a mechanic, so I end up needing to take it to various shops for the more involved stuff. For the most part, I'm loving the WJ. I love how stuff from the different model years is just plug and play. I replaced the stock overhead EVIC unit with one that has HomeLink in it with no additional work. And it only cost me $8 at the junkyard. They do seem like very well thought-out machines. I really like how quiet they are compared to the XJ. I love my XJ, but it does get a little noisy and cramped inside.

  9. The early 90s version of that looked much more like the regular Cherokee with the nice boxy body!!

Those are the ones to get for the look of them and some of the parts are similar to work on.
